Local Board Offices and Fire Station, Neyhey Road, Milnrow

BASE RECORD

The Milnrow Local Board of Health was established in 1870. Dates are uncertain, but they appear to have commenced work on their Municipal Offices on Newhey Road about 1885 with the fire station added about 1889. A county police station (qv) was built about 1886 and a Public Library (qv) added in 1907.

The clock tower, which carries the date 1888, may or may not have constituted a separate phase of the work. Early photographs show the top of this to have been an ornate affair more in keeping with the style of the building. This appears to have survived until at least the 1930s. For whatever reason, the top stage has been replaced with the simplest of constructions, giving the grouping a somewhat unfinished appearance.
