New Build

In 1882 the Methodists of Wellington determined to replace their old chapel. Ground further down New Street was purchased (the current site). The cost of buying the land, building the new chapel, and refurbishing the old building as a Sunday School was £4,000. The new building, designed by the Bradford architect Herbert Isitt, who was connected by marriage to Thomas Groom of Telford , had an imposing Italianate frontage. 82 feet by 52 feet and large galleries on three sides, providing 850 sittings. It opened in 1883.
