Proposed Art Gallery and Library, Bury, (Architectural Competition)

In the Bury Art Gallery competition the professional assessor, Mr. R. Knill Freeman, of Bolton, last week gave in his award. Twenty-two sets of designs were received, and out of these the following seven were favourably reported upon by Mr. Freeman : — " Mezzotint," submitted by Messrs. Woodhouse & Willoughby, Manchester ; " Octagon," Messrs. Cheers & Smith, Blackburn ; " Plan," Mr. John Johnson, London; "Diadem," Messrs. Gibson & Russell, London ; " Star in a Circle," Mr. F. J. Parkinson, Blackburn ; " Simnel," Messrs. Maxwell & Tuke, Manchester ; and " Ballon d'Essai," Messrs. J. D. & S. J. Mould, Bury and Manchester. Mr. Freeman further recommended that the three premiums be awarded as follow:— 1, " Mezzotint " ; 2, " Octagon " ; 3, " Plan." [British Architect 22 October 1897 page 288]
