In 1922 Harold Hughes, the Bangor Diocesan architect, presented plans for a Celtic cross to be erected on what became known as Wynnstay Road at a public meeting. After much debate the Town Council finally chose the Wynnstay Road site. The memorial was unveiled by Lord Kenyon, then Lord Lieutenant of the County of Denbigh, on 5 December 1925.
