Mr Chester's first work for Mr Knowles was the redecoration of the old Theatre Royal, an old playgoers will remember the pleasure which was felt when the gaslight revealed to them the new order of things created by the new architect, and by George Jackson and his assistants, not forgetting Robert Crozier, who painted the Shakespearean medallions in front of the boxes. [Manchester City News Saturday 7 January 1882 – obituary]. The theatre was destroyed by fire in 1844.
