Edwin Hugh Shellard was born on 8 February 1815 at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, the son of Joseph Shellard, but nothing is yet known of his early life and training. In 1838, at the age of twenty-eight and apparently a fully-fledged architect and civil engineer, he was in partnership with Charles Baker in Cheltenham, a partnership dissolved on 16 August 1841. He next moved to Manchester where he set up in practice on his own account in 1842-1843. Here he enjoyed almost immediate success. Over the next three years he obtained commissions for at least twenty-five churches as well as the occasional school in Manchester and the surrounding districts.  Shellard’s output was not lost on the Manchester Courier which reported: CONSECRATION OF CHURCHES - SINGULAR CIRCUMSTANCE. lt is somewhat singular circumstance that all the churches which the Right Reverend the Lord Bishop of Chester will consecrate while on his present visit to his diocese, namely; St. Mary's, Droylsden, and the churches at Oldham and Shuttleworth have all been erected from the plans of Mr. Shellard, architect of this city; and it must be highly gratifying to him. It is but seldom the fortune of one architect to have so many churches consecrated at one time, and perhaps the circumstance we have noted never occurred before. [Manchester Courier 12 February 1848 page 4].  In 1859 he took John A Brown into partnership and retired about 1863.

Edwin Hugh Shellard, J.P., aged 72 years, died suddenly about noon on Sunday 1 February 1885 at the Old Hall, Hollingworth. He had been a county magistrate for nearly 20 years, and in that capacity had sat both at Hyde and Dukinfield.
