Born in Blackburn, Frederick Josias Robinson was the son of Dixon Robinson, solicitor, and his second wife Matilda Ingram. He was a pupil, later partner of Henry Isaac Stevens of Derby (1806-1873). He was assistant In office of Sir George Gilbert Scott (1811-1878), before returning to Derby.
