Herbert Edward Tijou

Herbert Edward Tijou was born at Hampstead, the son of William Tijou and Emma (nee Dollman), He was educated at the Blue-coat School, Christ's Hospital, London, subsequently being apprenticed to the London architect, Frank Dollman (who may also have been his uncle). When he had served his articles he moved to Darlington, and thence to Chester, where was employed as architect's assistant. According to some of his obituaries he was next employed by Ernest Bates on a church at Castleton, Rochdale before commencing independent practice.
On 10 January 1861 he married Jane Anne Sanders at St Giles Church, Durham, and moved to Manchester with his new bride before the census held on 7 April 1861. Here he remained until his death in 1885. With his wife he was a convert to Roman Catholicism, his known architectural commissions being almost exclusively for the Roman Catholic Church. He was elected an Associate of the RIBA on 17 June 1867, proposed by E Salomons, JK Colling, and W Slater.
Herbert Edward Tijou died at his residence on 19 January 1885. Among his significant works were St. James's Church, Pendleton; St. Andrew's Church (CofE), Eccles; St William’s Church Angel Meadow, Manchester; St Joseph at Reddish; and the Chapel for the Convent of our Lady of Loretto, Upper Moss Lane, Hulme (listed Grade II). In addition, he designed a number of Roman Catholic Schools.

Note - The correct date of death is 19 January 1885 – Manchester Courier. This obituary of 24 January 1885 containing the phrase “died last Monday” became the basis of subsequent obituaries published over the following weeks.
