Arthur Edgar Berresford was born in 1881 near Alderley Edge, Cheshire, the son of Abraham Knowles Berrsford, bank manager, and Lizzie Agnes Berrsford. He was articled as a builder’s apprentice to Thomas Massey, head of Isaac Massey and Sons in that town, in 1895 and had remained with them as an assistant. In 1905 the volume of business caused A H Baillie Scott to take on Arthur Edgar Beresford as assistant. According to Beresford's own account he was selected from a number of applicants because of his experience in restoring old houses. Beresford remained with Baillie Scott as assistant until 1919. the year in which he was made partner.
