The second son of Benjamin Hoyland, master builder and his wife Frances, both originally from Yorkshire. Articled to Messrs Smith & Woodhouse in 1882. Assistant to G H Hill for 2 years, to Bradshaw & Gass for 4 years, in Manchester Ship Canal Co. Architects' Department for 2 years, and to John Ely from about 1896.
