Arthur Richard Gradwell, the son of Richard Gradwell, bank manager and his wife, Elizabeth Ellen Gradwell was born at Ormskirk in 1852.  Nothing is yet known of his education or early career. About 1885 he entered into partnership with James Herbert Stones under style of Stones and Gradwell, in Blackburn, this partnership being dissolved on 3 July 1899.  A G Gradwell carried out few architectural commissions after the end of the partnership. Rather, he became an estate agent and “auctioneer of real estate.”

On 20 September 1877 he married Mary Ann Sefton at St Peter’s Church Salesbury. They had two sons, Arthur Rowland and Herbert, both of whom became architects.
