Arthur Rogers Maw was the son of Walter Maw, solicitor, of the firm of Messrs Ascroft, Maw, and Shimeld, Oldham After being educated privately he was sent to Oldham Hulme Grammar School in April 1900 for seven years, following which he studied Architecture at Manchester University before being articled to Taylor and Simister of Oldham in 1911.

He enlisted at the beginning of World War I and was gazetted I December 1914; 2/10th Battalion, Manchester Regiment, but was attached to 2/9th Battalion. He served on the Western Front with the rank of Captain. An initial report in the Manchester Guardian of 12 April 1918, page 8, repeated in Building News, suggest that he had been wounded. on 21/22 March, a subsequent report recording him as wounded and missing. In June 1918 his father sought any information.  “MISSING – INFORMATION WANTED. MAW - Captain A R Maw, Manchester Regiment, wounded and missing 21 March 1918. Any information gratefully received by Mr Walter Maw, 107 Windsor Road, Oldham.” [Manchester Guardian 15 June 1918 page 4]. His body was not recovered.
