Charles Henry Mitchell a well-known Manchester artist and member of the Manchester Academy of, Fine Arts was the son of Thomas Mitchell, a surgeon at Birstall near Leeds, where he was born, about 1821. After receiving a liberal education, he was articled to Mr Chantrell, a distinguished Leeds architect. After completing his articles, he came to Manchester n 1842, and entered the office of John Eagar Gregan, in Princess-street. Remaining some short time with Mr Gregan, he next practised independently as an architect principally for the then leading firm of contractors and builders in Manchester, Messrs Bowdon, Edwards, and Forster, of Brook-street. His earliest and closest acquaintances when he first came to Manchester were Selim Rothwell and William Percy, the portrait painter. To these two friends he owed much of the inspiration which marked his subsequent professional life as an artist. It was with William Percy he made, in 1844, his first sketching trip in the neighbourhood of Bolton Abbey and Dolton Woods.
Charles Henry Mitchell died at his residence, 121 Charlotte Street, Fitzroy Square, London on 25 November 1882. Since taking up residence in London, about 1875, he did little in his profession.
