The son of Christopher Simpson, stonemason, and his wife Christopher Simpson was employed firstly as an office boy (messenger) at the age of 13 before training as a draughtsman (1891). Although he had no known formal architectural education, he was listed as an architect and surveyor by the time of the 1901 census. By 1902 he was in-house architect to G Shaw and Company, brewers of Leigh.
