Born 24 December 1880 (RIBA) at Whitefield, Clifford Thorp was the second son of Thomas Thorp, architect and scientific instrument maker.  Early in his career Clifford Thorp was in partnership with Harry Hindle Clegg under the style Clegg and Thorp junior, architects, surveyors, and estate agents, 41, Corporation-street. Manchester. This partnership was dissolved on 1 October 1905, after which Clifford Thorp worked on his own account.  Although still listed as an architect in 1926 it is difficult to establish how active he was in the profession. By 1922 he was a director of Thomas Thorp and Co., Ltd., Engineers & Scientific Instrument Makers, Victoria Works, Whitefield, the business established by his father about 1880.

Clifford Thorp died suddenly at his home, Carisbrook, on 25 December 1942, a day after his 62nd birthday. He was interred at All Saints Church, Stand. And was survived by his widow Alice Maud (Mills) whom he had married in 1904.
