Clifton Wilkinson Whittenbury was the son of R D Whittenbury, the manager of the Grant Brothers works at Ramsbottom until 1852 and His wife Catherine. He was also the great-grandson of James Dinwiddie of Hampsons Mill near Bury (CHECK)

In 1874 he joined George Oliver Bird in partnership under the style of Bird & Whittenbury  and was the sole representative of the firm after Bird’s death in 1878. (RIBA Directory). About 1887 he entered into partnership with Henry Austin Mather under the style Whittenbury and Mather. However, in 1895 and 1896 entries in the directories revert to the original name of Bird and Whittenbury.

Clifton Wilkinson Whittenbury died on 30 July 1896 at his residence, Meadehurst, Glebelands Road, Prestwich. He was unmarried.
