Duncan McKerrow was born in 1872 and articled to Steele & Balfour in Glasgow in 1888. At the end of his apprenticeship in 1893 he moved to Ayr as assistant to Allan Stevenson, remaining there until 1897 when he obtained a place in the office of Edwin Bowman in Newcastle upon Tyne. In 1899 he moved to Manchester to work first for John Ely from 1899 to 1901 and then for Mills & Murgatroyd from 1901 until 1902. He then obtained a salaried post in Manchester Corporation Architect's Department under the City Architect, Henry Price. Whilst there he undertook occasional work for William Cecil Hardisty and for W and G Higginbottom. He was admitted LRIBA on 30 January 1911, his proposers being Henry Price, Andrew Balfour of Steele & Balfour, and Walter Higginbottom. His nomination papers state that he had entered several competitions on his own account whilst still an assistant, winning the second premium for Peterhead Swimming Baths in 1896, third premium for Arbroath Infectious Diseases Hospital in 1899 and first premium for the Wilmslow Club and Public Hall in 1901.

He is listed the RIBA Kalendar of 1919 with an address in Northenden, Manchester. Nothing is yet known of his life after that date.
