Eric Skipworth Benson, the son of William Skipworth Benson and Ada Livesey was born on 28 September 1911 at Weaste, Salford and baptised at St Luke’s Church on 18 October 1911. In October 1929 Eric S Benson was registered as Probationer of the RIBA. He became an Associate of the RIBA in 1935 was elected a Fellow of the RIBA on 14 December 1944, the year in which he was President & Hon Sec of the Manchester Society of Architects. His partnership with Percy Howard which began about 1945 was dissolved on 12 January 1954

In the mid-1960s he was appointed lecturer at the School of Architecture, Manchester University, taking temporary charge of the School in 1975-1976.
