The son of William Wheeler Hoyland, flax spinner, and his wife Anna Maria, Francis Frazer Hoyland was born at Alderley Edge, Cheshire, in 1861. The family moved frequently with Francis Hoyland receiving his architectural training while resident in Edgbaston. By 1890 he had returned to the North West, having entered into partnership with William Dawes. At the time of his marriage he was living at Wilmslow.  The partnership with Dawes was short-lived, being dissolved by mutual consent on 25 July 1893. Little is known of his subsequent career. By 1901 he had moved back to the West Midlands and by 1930 he was living at Letchworth.

Francis Frazer Hoyland died on 4 January 1944 at St Catherine’s Nursing Home, Spring Road, Letchworth and was buried in the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin, Letchworth, alongside his wife.

Architectural Partnership. —Mr. William Dawes, architect, of London and Manchester, has taken Mr. Francis Frazer Hoyland into partnership, and the style of the firm will in future be “Dawes and Hoyland.” [Builder 8 November 1890 page 373]

NOTICE is hereby given, that the Partnership heretofore subsisting between us the undersigned, William  Dawes  and  Francis Frazer Hoyland, carrying  on business  as Architects  and  Surveyors, at 2, Cooper-street, Manchester, and  at 124, Chancery-lane, London, under the style  or firm of  Dawes  and  Hoyland, has  been  dissolved, by  mutual  consent as  and from  the   25th  day  of  July 1893,    All debts due  to  and  owing  by the  said late firm will be received  and  paid  by  the  said  William  Dawes, who  is carrying  on  the  business on  his  own account.—Dated this  10th  day  of  April,  1894.
