George Pickup commenced independent practice about 1869 in Manchester. In 1880, he joined his fellow Methodists, Edward Potts and Frederick Whittaker Dixon (who had been employed by Woodhouse & Potts) in partnership. When Dixon left to set up his own practice, Edward Potts admitted his eldest son, William Edward, into partnership, the practice continuing under the style of Potts, Son and Pickup until 1898, notwithstanding that George Pickup had died in 1891.
