The son of John and Elizabeth Travis, Henry Travis was born in Manchester on 21 February 1921 and was in partnership with William Mangnall with offices at 3 Norfolk Street, Manchester, from 1845 until the dissolution of the partnership in 1862. He remained in Manchester working on his own account until at least 1867, after which he moved away, Details of his subsequent career are far from clear. In 1871 he still gave his occupation as architect but was living at Sandon, a small village in Staffordshire with his second wife, in 1881 he married his third wife at Croydon and by 1891 he was living at Stretham, giving his occupation as a sculptor.

In 1856 he married Margaret, second daughter of John Edwards Esq of Chorlton-on-Medlock. They were married at St Margaret’s Church, Dunham Massey, one of the first marriages to be conducted in the new church. She died in April 1865. By 1871 he married to Helen C (unknown) born in Scotland and 25 years his junior. His last recorded marriage was to Mary Emma Eliza Crickmer at Croydon, Surrey in 1881.

Henry Travis of Beaconsfield Terrace, Byne Road, Sydenham, Beckenham Kent. Died 10 April 1896. Probate London 19 June 1896 to Mary Emma Eliza, widow Effects £19 13s.

An earlier report of his death had proved unfounded. In 1891 he wrote to the editor of the Manchester Guardian:

Sir - A writer in your issue of 4th inst, after describing some of the works of the late Edward Walters, says “The authors of the Watts Warehouse in Portland-street too have passed away. Though the building is hardly one to be repeated, yet it is finely massed, not commonplace, and one for Manchester to be proud of.” As I designed and superintended the erection of this structure from foundation to finish, I must ask you to allow me to correct this mis-statement. I am etc. HENRY TRAVIS The Limes, South Streatham. 14 August 1891. [Manchester Guardian 17 August 1891 Page 7 Column 5 (Correspondence)]
