Herbert Healey Clough was born at Milnrow in 1875-5, the son of George H Clough, Licensed Victualler, and his wife Amelia. By 1891 he had been articled as an architect’s pupil.  H H Clough commenced independent practice 1901. In 1907-1908 he was working for the self-made millionaire James White, at the time a speculative builder, estate agent and mortgage broker. The association ended in 1908 when White went bankrupt, although he eventually repaid his creditors in full.  White then moved to London where he amassed and lost a considerable fortune. [DNB]. Much of H H Clough's work in the inter-war period was for the Phoenix Brewery Company Limited, Heywood. In 1925 he was elected a Licentiate of the RIBA

In July-Sept 1900 he married Kate Dickinson at Rochdale

Herbert Healey Clough died on 4 March 1941 at Christie Hospital, Withington, Manchester. He was survived by his widow and two daughters; a son having died in infancy.
