Born on 23 July 1843 at Great George Street, Westminster, James Henry Lynde was the eldest son of James Gascoigne Lynde (qv), and father of Gerald Gascoigne Lynde (qv). He served an apprenticeship with Cochrane's, Stourbridge, and while he was with that firm assisted in the construction of Cannon Street Station, London. The formation of the provincial associations of students of the Institution of Civil Engineers can be said to have been originated by him when he was resident engineer on the Wolverhampton and Walsall Railway, about. 1868. While engaged on this work, he encouraged his assistants to meet weekly to discuss engineering questions and write and read papers on engineering subjects, a practice continued at his Manchester office.

James Henry Lynde was elected a full member of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1877 and was the first President of the Manchester Association of Civil Engineer Students. While practising as an engineer in Manchester, in the late seventies and early eighties, he was responsible for the laying of the tramways in that city. At that time the tramway system, although owned by the Corporation, was leased to a private firm, and the motive power was supplied by horses. Later, the tramways were taken over and operated by the Manchester Corporation. His principal work, however, was connected with parliamentary and legal proceedings. Following his resignation in 1878, James Gascoigne Lynde joined his son in partnership.

He married on 2nd May 1872 Florence, daughter of George Cox of Wolverhampton. She was born 14th February 1847, died in 1913, and was buried at Brooklands. He had three children - Gerald Gascoigne, born 2nd March 1873, died 1938; Florence Muriel Born 30th April 1876; and Helen Gwyneth Born 19th May 1883, died January 1954. James Henry Lynde died on 26th June 1919 at his home Oakleigh, Macclesfield, and was buried alongside his wife at Brooklands Cemetery, Sale.
