John Albert Reinhold Hildebrandt was variously recorded as Mill architect, civil engineer and surveyor, machine agent, broker and exporter, newspaper proprietor, and Patent Agent between 1873 and 1879.

He was born in Saxa Gotha Germany about 1846 and had emigrated (probably with Auguste Rauch) to England by 1867 at which time he was employed as an engineer’s assistant at Bury. In 1871-1872 he was attending evening classes in engineering at Owen’s College under Professor Osborne Reynolds MA. In May 1872 he was awarded first prize and first certificate in Mechanical Engineering, and second certificate in civil engineering. [MG 29 May 1872 p7]. He was elected a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1873 but ceased his membership in 1881. For a number of years he was Hon Secretary of the Scientific and Mechanical Society, 88 Mosley Street, Manchester, in 1876 and read several papers at the meetings.

* According to the marriage records J A R Hildebrandt married Augusta Roche at Salford in 1800. However, this may have been an attempt to regularise the relationship. Auguste Rauch is listed as his wife in the 1871 census as is his son Bruno, aged 2.

Following his bankruptcy Hildebrandt and his wife changed their name to Harvey and emigrated to Halifax Nova Scotia in December 1881. He died of heart failure on 17 May 1918 at Carleton Ottowa. Bruno Harvey died on 18 January 1881 having been struck by a train.
