John Broadbent was born in 1866 at Worsley the son of Thomas Broadbent, master joiner, and his wife Margaret and was apprenticed to his father. By the time he was three the family had removed to Altrincham. He was recorded as a Clerk of Works and Technical School teacher in 1901. In 1925, he was described as an architect and surveyor, and consulting engineer to Shell Mex Ltd. No commissions have been found save for Crossley House, 755 Ashton Old Road, Openshaw (1912-1913) which Simon Inglis attributes to him; Buildings of England names the architect as James Barritt Broadbent.

John Broadbent died on 3 April 1925 at Holmlea 71 Hale Road, Altrincham and was interred at Altrincham Cemetery. He is not listed in RIBA Directory.
