John Holt was the son of Robert and Maria (nee Ashworth) Holt of Bury. Both parents died young and by 1881 their six orphaned children, aged 10-20, were living with their uncle, Edward Ashworth, in Worsley. Ten years later they were all living together in Manchester Road, Hopwood with John being recorded as a mining engineer. He appears to have commenced independent practice in 1896 and in 1901 he was living in Swinton in practice as a civil engineer and architect. His known architectural works were carried out between 1896 and 1903, although he was still in practice as an architect in Swinton in 1909 (Slater’s Directory).  By 1911 he had moved to Southwold, Suffolk together with his housekeeper and her niece. Here he practiced as an architect at home and was so listed in Kelly’s Directory of 1916. Date of death unknown.
