Born in 1851 at Newton Heath, John Joseph Woodman was the son of James Woodman, manufacturer, and was articled to a Manchester architect. He commenced business on his own account about 1875 as an architect and lightning conductor manufacturer at 7 St Ann’s Square, with £150, given to him by his first wife. About 1888 he removed to 10 St Mary’s Parsonage, but became bankrupt and after June 1889 has had no place of business. The cause of his failure, he alleged, was the loss of an action which he brought. He was elected ARIBA on 20 March 1882, proposed by J Wynne, A Darbyshire, and J Redford but was not included in the RIBA Kalendar of 1904.

In later years he is recorded as an artist, resident at Brook House, Chorlton Green. Directory entries suggest he died about 1909.
