Born in 1906, John Shorland Ball was the elder son of Lieutenant Colonel George Westcott OBE JP and Nellie Wescott JP. He trained as an architect and was later taken into partnership by his father under the style George Westcott and Son.  He was elected ARIBA in 1934. A keen rugby player he appeared for Wilmslow RUFC 1st XV in the 1929-1930 season.

During the Second World War he served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers, therby ending his architectural career.

John Shorland Westcott died on Saturday 8 June 1946 as a result of a flying accident near Lagos, Nigeria. He was on military service and was buried at the CWG Cemetery at Yaba.
