A man of whom more is known of his passing than his life, John Williamson Whittaker (Junior) was born in Bolton in 1839 the son of John Williamson Whittak. By 1861 he was a timber merchant and in 1864-1868 a cotton spinner. At the time of his death in 1881 he was described as an architect and surveyor. Reports of an inquest into his death recorded:

Mr J. Whittaker, architect and surveyor, was killed on Monday week by an accidental fall from a train near Hindley station on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. At the inquest it was proved that deceased had been to Wigan on business and went to sleep in the train. Waking up suddenly, he opened the carriage door on the off side and fell out, and was mutilated by a passing train. A verdict of accidental death was returned. [Building News 18 Feb 1881 Page 176]
