John Wolstencroft was born in Manchester in 1824 and had commenced practise as an architect by 1850 with an office in King Street. Slaters Directory of 1871 lists John Wolstencroft. Surveyor to the Moss Side Health Board, but generally little information has been found regarding his commissions and the sources of his wealth. Wolstencroft retired in 1881, putting his house in Wilbraham Road up for auction. Sales particulars indicate that it was a substantial house with eight bedrooms, set in almost two acres of ground, and recently completed.  That Wolstencroft was the architect is not stated. By 1891 John Wolstencroft was living at Bourne, Lincolnshire and ten years later at 67 Streathbourne Road Upper Tooting Surrey, where he died in 1905.
