Joseph Lindley was born in Manchester*in 1807. He was the father of William, born 1829 and Alfred born 1843. William’s occupation is given as architect on his wedding certificate, but as a portrait artist by 1861. Alfred also trained as an architect and remained as assistant until his death. About 1850 the family moved from Cheetham Hill to Ashton-under-Lyne where Joseph established a practice as architect and surveyor, a practice which would continue into the twentieth century.
