Born in 1903, Kathleen Orrey Brayshaw was the daughter of John Richard Brayshaw, warehouse manager, and his wife Isabel. By1 911 the family were living at Lindley-cum-Quarmby on the outskirts of Huddersfield. She was one of the first female students to attend the Manchester University School of Architecture and enjoyed some success, including a third share of Manchester Institute of Builders Travelling Scholarship in Architecture. Following completion of her architectural education and her election as Associate of the RIBA in 1927, she initially returned to Huddersfield but by 1936 was living in London.
