The son of Andrew Trimen (qv), and his second wife Mary (nee Buttress) Leonard Buttress Trimen was born in 1846 at Chelsea, London, and followed his father’s profession of architect, establishing a practice on the Isle of Wight before he was thirty.  In 1887 Leonard and his family emigrated to Victoria, British Columbia where Trimen found greater success, obtaining several substantial commissions. At the time Victoria was a boom town and before his death five years later, he had completed over twenty commissions including St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (1889-90).
