Lewyn James Prestwich was born on 18 April 1883 at Leigh, Lancashire, and christened at the parish church of St Mary the Virgin on 12 August of that year. He was the second son of James Caldwell Prestwich, architect and his wife Georgina Matilda. Following training under his father, he emigrated to the United States in 1906, leaving Liverpool aboard the "Cedric" and arriving at Ellis Island, New York on 6 May. He was a member of The American Institute of Architects (AIA) 1922-1935 and described as an Architectural Inspector at a salary of $2700 in the 1940 census. By 1919 he was resident in Omaha Nabraska.
Lewyn James Prestwich died on 5 April 1963 in Los Angles California. His death is recorded on the Prestwich family headstone at Leigh Cemetery, England, although whether the body was returned has yet to be established. He was described as 5 feet 6 inches tall, of fair complexion
