The son of Patrick Campbell Auld, landscape artist, and his wife, Mary, Patrick Auld was born in 1850 at St Pancras, London. He is not included in the Dictionary of British Architects and nothing is yet known of his early education and training. At the age of 33 he joined Henry Spalding in partnership about April 1883. He married Mary, the daughter of Jacob Bray on 18 March 1875 at the Church of St Peter, Regent Square, St Pancras. Census records indicate that they had one child, Winifred, born about 1879.

Patrick Auld died on Monday 4 March 1889 at his residence, Felpham House, Felpham-on-Sea, Sussex, as the result of an accident while supervising building work on his house.
