Born in Russia in 1879 the son of Hyman and Rose Caminesky. His father, a Jewish rabbi, is assumed to have emigrated to England as a result of religious persecution. Peter Caminesky changed his surname to Cummings at some time after 1912, possibly on the outbreak of the First World War.
