John Mould was born on 31 July 1822 at Bronnington, Flintshire. As a boy he attended the Parish Church in Hanmer where he sang in the choir for many years. He was converted to Primitive Methodism at the age of 20, being “convinced of his sin while attending a service in the Horsemans Green Chapel near Whitchurch.” John Mould is said to have designed and superintended the erection of over 20 chapels and schools during his ministry. His obituary records that his ministry was severely practical. His piety was natural, personal, sincere. There was in his nature no morbid taint, no sourness, no selfishness. He was free from self-consciousness and sentimentality.

John Mould married Sarah Diggle (1830-1891) on 13 July 1853 at Wesleyan Chapel, Bury, Lancashire. Census returns identify four children: James Diggle Mould (1856-1935),  an architect; Dinah Alice Mould (1858-1931),  married John Wright; John Thomas Mould (1861-1934), an electrical engineer; and Samuel Joseph Mould (1869-1923), an architect.

John Mould died on 29 May 1887 at Wigan, Lancashire.
