The son of George Heaton and his first wife Jane, Richard Arthur Heaton was born on 9 March 1878.Educated at Byron’s Private School and Wigan Grammar School.He was articled to George Heaton in 1893 and remained as assistant until 1910. Following the death of his father he commenced independent practice in 1911 in partnership with his brother, Frederick G Heaton in Wigan. In 1912 he became a Licentiate of the RIBA. He continued to practice until at least 1936 in later years under the style George Heaton and Sons.
On 8 December 1906 Richard Arthur Heaton married Ethel Hampson, of 52 Swinley Lane, Wigan, the daughter of James Hampson, accountant.

Richard Arthur Heaton died on 13 July 1940 at 154 Upholland Road, Billinge, and was buried at Lower Ince Cemetery, Wigan.
