Robert Walkington Greaves was born in York, the son of John Clapham Greaves, a Wesleyan minister, and Mary Elizabeth Greaves. Birth/christening 6 February 1872 at New Street Chapel York He was educated at Woodhouse Grove School Apperley Bridge, near Bradford after which he was articled to an architect. As a Wesleyan minister, John Greaves moved at regular intervals, and by 1903 this family were living in Cheetham. In 1903 Robert Walkington Greaves was practising on his own account in Manchester. Following his marriage to Elizabeth Ann, the daughter of Charles Boddy, builder and contractor, in that year he went to work as a manager for his father-in-law, and in 1921 inherited the business on the death of Charles Boddy, continuing it under its old name.
