Stephen Shaw was born at Kendal, Westmorland, in 1846, the son of Robert Shaw, builder, and Sarah, his wife. He was pupil and assistant of his brother, Richard Carradus Shaw who died in 1862. Stephen Shaw commenced independent practice in 1867 at Kendal and retired in 1921 (RIBA Kalendar) the practice being continued by his son, Malcolm Graham Shaw. He was elected FRIBA on 16 June 1890, proposed by A H Tiltmnan, R Plumbe, and H P Monckton.
