The son of Alderman Thomas Steven Muirhead of Barnfield, Prestwich, Thomas Muirhead was born at Manchester, 11 April 1855 and  educated privately. He was articled to James Barlow Fraser (1835-1922) of Manchester and Leeds from 1874 until March 1877 when he commenced independent practice. He was a member of the Manchester Society of Architects and elected Associate of the RIBA on 9 January 1882, proposed by G T Redmayne, F H Oldham and J B Fraser. In 1920 he reigned membership of the RIBA.

His architectural practice was large and varied including such works as the Public Offices and Children’s Home at St Anne's‑on‑Sea and the pavilions erected for the Lancashire CCC at Old Trafford and the pavilion and tavern at Kennington Oval for the Surrey CCC. He also built many private houses and was responsible for the racing stables for Sir John Thurston at Malton.

He was a keen sportsman, interested in cricket and football and a member of the Council of the Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club.

Thomas Muirhead died on 21 May 1921 at 3 Hanover Square Higher Broughton, and was buried in the family grave in the churchyard of  St Paul’s Church, Kersal on 24 May 1921.
