William David Henderson was the son of David and Esther Henderson and nephew of William Henderson (qv) and was born at Newton Abbot. Following the death of David Henderson, his widow and son moved to Oxton where she became housekeeper to William Henderson. On completion of his schooling William David Henderson was found employment as a gardener in the nursey. He subsequently took a more managerial role being described as a clerk in the 1871 census and may have been given responsibility for Henderson’s florist shop in Birkenhead.  By 1881 he was describing himself as a garden architect/ landscape gardener. He married Agnes Nicolaides, a widow and the daughter of George Agnew on 25 July 1872 and by 1881 they had three sons and a daughter.
