William Henry Hunter was chief assistant to E.L. Williams. Hunter had previously spent almost ten years with the Weaver Navigation and was involved with the Manchester Ship Canal from its inception. Appointed Chief Engineer to the Ship Canal Company on the retirement of Sir Edward Williams in 1894, he was later involved in the construction of the Panama Canal.
