William Henry Mitchell was the son of Alexander Mitchell, a photographer and his wife Jane, both born in Scotland. He was articled to Robert J McBeath of Sale 1897-1901, after which he was an improver with Oswald C Hill in 1901 and assistant to Messrs F W Dixon and Son probably from 1906. In 1911 he commenced independent practice in Manchester, having gained the commission for the Public Baths at Sale.

 

 

 

After World War 1 Mitchell was in a partnership styled Naish and Mitchell. Following the death of Sidney Naish in 1925 W H Mitchell moved to Bury St Edmunds to join two surviving members of the Naish family, Senna Elvira Annie Naish and John Sidney Naish in partnership under the style of Naish and Mitchell. This partnership was dissolved on 1 April 1930 after which W H Mitchell practised alone while retaining the style Naish and Mitchell

He passed the qualifying examination and was elected ARIBA on 30 November 1908, proposed by E Hewitt, P Ogden and  P S Worthington. In 1932 he was elected Fellow of the RIBA.

William Henry Mitchell of Westley Brow Bury St. Edmunds died on 31 August 1966 at St. Marys Hospital Bury St. Edmunds.
