The son of Charles Smith, William Murray Smith was born at Dumfries, Scotland but was living in Manchester by the time of his marriage in 1861. Following the death of Philip Nunn (qv), he was appointed surveyor and architect on the estates of Sir Humphrey de Trafford in 1867.He died on 5 June 1872, aged 39, leaving a widow and young family.
