William Newby was born at Milnthorpe but had moved to Manchester by 1851 when he was employed as an architect’s clerk. By 1855 he had commenced independent practice with offices in Corporation Street, Manchester. It is suggested that he was commissioned by the Philips family to carry out various schemes for warehouses. His son, Thomas, (qv) was certainly employed as resident architect for Welcolme Hall.
