William Venn Gough

William Venn Gough was born at Frome, Somerset, and was a pupil of Henry Masters ARIBA. He worked as an assistant in Hansom’s office, before joining Archibald Ponton in partnership under the style Ponton and Gough in 1870 The partnership was dissolved in 1878, after which he worked alone. About 1908 his son, Arthur Reutlinger Gough, joined the practice, which continued into the 1930s. William Venn Gough was elected an Associate of the RIBA in 1872 and developed an extensive practice in the Bristol area.
In 1900 he was awarded first premium in the competition for Bury Grammar Schools. Presumably as a result of this he was later commissioned to design the Memorial in Haymarket Street Bury to John Kay, the inventor of the flying shuttle.
