These cottages were built for the 1905 Letchworth Cheap Cottages Exhibition, of which Sir Geoffrey Christie Miller (of the hatting family Christy & Co) was a sponsor. They were first illustrated on Dunkerley’s drawing of the planned employee houses for the Heatly Gresham Company and were similar in style to the Noah’s Ark houses on Bird’s Hill. The mansard roof was chosen because of its cheapness. The total cost per cottage was £120 or £146 according to internal fittings.
