The Barracks site faced Regent Road where it was proposed to erect 32 shops of varying size and of a character in keeping the requirements of the tradespeople of Salford. It was hoped that in time that Regent Road would become the business centre of the borough, and therefore it was considered that something worthy of the neighbourhood should be built.
