(9th) Board School: Blackfriars Road Salford
TWO NEW BOARD SCHOOLS FOR SALFORD, The memorial stores of the Blackfriars-street Board School, and the Marlborough-road Board School, High-town, which are being built the Salford School Board, were laid on Saturday afternoon. The Blackfriars Street School will replace the present Richmond Hill School, part which was condemned some years ago by the Education Department. The site contains 3,015 square yards, the bulk of which has been purchased from the Salford Corporation, and the remainder from the Dean and Canons of Manchester. There will be accommodation for 666 children, 290 being infants, and 376 older children. These figures are somewhat larger than the accommodation in the existing school, but for some time past the provision for infants has not been sufficient. The school has been arranged transversely the length of the site, and stretches from East Stanley-street to Wheathill-street, with its main frontage Blackfriars-street. The ground floor will be occupied by the infants' schoolroom and six classrooms. There will also be the cookery classroom, for the use of the older children on the same floor. On the first floor will be the mixed schools and its four classrooms. By means of movable partitions the principal schoolrooms may be divided when required, so that the sexes may be taught separately. Adequate room will also be provided for the teachers, the children's cloaks, and so on. The school is being built by Messrs. W. Southern and Sons, from the designs of Mr Henry Lord. The tender for the building amounts to £7268 and it is estimated that the furnishings will cost about £450, [Manchester Courier28 October 1895 page 6]
